(Japan) Autumn at Kurofuyama

September 2026

A QUIET ESCAPE INTO THE MOUNTAINS

Kurofu-yama is a 2,404-meter-high mountain in Nagano Prefecture, forming part of the outer rim of Mount Asama, one of Japan’s most active volcanoes.

What makes Kurofu-yama special is not only the hike itself, but the scenery waiting along the ridgeline. On a clear day, you can enjoy an impressive, almost cinematic view of the massive volcanic landscape of Mount Asama rising across the valley. It is the kind of scenery that makes you stop walking for a moment and simply stare.

The trail is also relatively accessible for a mountain at this altitude, making it a popular choice for a day hike. But the scenery feels much bigger and wilder than the effort required to get there.

MOSSY FORESTS AND VOLCANIC ROCKS

Kurofu-yama has a cool alpine climate and a wonderfully quiet atmosphere. There were not many hikers when we visited, which made the trail feel even more peaceful.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get the famous panoramic views that day. It was a foggy and rainy day, and Mount Asama was mostly hidden behind the clouds. But somehow, the weather gave the mountain a completely different character.

The trail wound through a beautiful, moss-covered forest, with lush green moss and interesting plants growing everywhere. I have always loved the green, almost magical atmosphere of Japanese mountain forests, and Kurofu-yama was no exception.

As we climbed higher, the scenery gradually changed. Rocky sections appeared along the trail, scattered with red volcanic stones—a reminder that we were hiking around an enormous active volcano. The contrast between the soft green moss and the dark and reddish volcanic rocks made the trail surprisingly fascinating.

A LITTLE ADVENTURE ALONG THE WAY

And the mountain kept giving us little surprises.

Along the trail, we came across a metal volcano shelter, a rather unexpected sight in the middle of the forest. We also spotted a tiny frog and a variety of surprisingly large and interesting mushrooms growing beside the trail.

None of these things were the main attraction, but they made the hike much more fun. Instead of simply walking toward the summit, we found ourselves constantly looking around to see what we might discover next. The foggy weather almost made the forest feel like a little world of its own.

BEGINNER-FRIENDLY, BUT NEVER BORING

Another thing I enjoyed about Kurofu-yama was how pleasant the trail was to walk. The route was relatively easy and manageable even for beginner hikers, without feeling boring or overly crowded.

Even without perfect weather, there was always something interesting to look at—the moss, the plants, the mushrooms, the tiny frog, and the volcanic rocks. Every little discovery made us forget that we weren’t getting the spectacular views we had hoped for.

Sometimes, a mountain doesn’t need to give you a perfect view to make the hike memorable.

I’LL HAVE TO COME BACK

Since we visited in early autumn, the autumn colors had not arrived yet. The forest was still mostly green, but I could already imagine how beautiful it would look once the leaves turned red, orange, and yellow.

And that gives me a good excuse to come back.

Next time, I would love to see Kurofu-yama in a different season—hopefully on a clear autumn day, with colorful foliage and a full view of Mount Asama.

For this hike, the mountain gave us fog instead of a panorama, but perhaps that was part of its charm. The quiet mossy forest, volcanic rocks, unexpected mushrooms, a tiny frog, and even a mysterious metal volcano shelter made the journey feel like a small adventure of its own.

Sometimes, the best hiking memories aren’t waiting at the summit—they’re hiding beside the trail.
