(JAPAN) ADATARA-YAMA — AUTUMN COLORS AND A VOLCANIC WILDERNESS

Oct. 2026

A MOUNTAIN OF FIRE AND COLOR

Autumn in Japan is all about colorful leaves, crisp mountain air, and spectacular scenery. But ADATARA-YAMA (安達太良山) in Fukushima Prefecture offers something a little different from the usual autumn hiking experience. Here, fiery red and golden slopes meet a rugged volcanic landscape, creating a fascinating contrast between the beauty of autumn and the raw power of nature.

Rising to 1,728 meters above sea level, Adatara-yama is a popular hiking destination in Japan’s Tohoku region. Its distinctive ridgeline, sweeping mountain views, and dramatic volcanic terrain make it a rewarding place to explore, especially when autumn paints the surrounding mountains in shades of red, orange, and gold.

A RIDE THROUGH THE AUTUMN COLORS

Our adventure began with a ride on the ADATARA ROPEWAY, which took us up to the starting point of the hiking trail. Even though autumn is the busiest season for mountain sightseeing, the ropeway operates only from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. That meant we had to keep an eye on the clock—a late return could leave us with no choice but to walk all the way down the mountain!

Fortunately, the ride itself was a treat. As the ropeway climbed higher, the mountainside unfolded beneath us in a beautiful patchwork of autumn colors. The journey was long enough to enjoy the scenery but, with such a view outside the window, it hardly felt long at all.

FROM COLORFUL FORESTS TO ROCKY TERRAIN

The first part of the hike was relatively easy, and the scenery was beautiful. Surrounded by autumn colors and open mountain views, it was the kind of trail that made us want to stop every few minutes to take another look.

However, the landscape gradually changed as we approached the volcanic crater. The gentle trail gave way to increasingly rocky terrain, and the lush vegetation became less prominent. We also came across numerous piles of stones along the way, adding an unusual touch to the already distinctive landscape.

The closer we got to the crater, the more dramatic the scenery became. The colorful forests were gradually replaced by a stark, rugged world shaped by volcanic activity. It felt as though we were leaving an ordinary mountain hike behind and entering a completely different environment.

NUMA-NO-TAIRA — A VOLCANIC WORLD

One of the highlights of Adatara-yama is NUMA-NO-TAIRA, a vast volcanic crater area known for its pale, rocky landscape and otherworldly appearance. The whitish volcanic terrain stood in striking contrast to the autumn colors covering the surrounding slopes.

The views were incredible: rugged mountain ridges stretched into the distance, while clouds drifted across the landscape, constantly changing the atmosphere. There was something almost surreal about the scene. Instead of the familiar image of a Japanese mountain covered in trees, we found ourselves surrounded by a much harsher and more exposed volcanic wilderness.

The hike was certainly longer and rockier than the beginning had suggested, but the scenery made every step worthwhile. The combination of the pale crater, dramatic mountain ridges, drifting clouds, and autumn colors was something that photographs could hardly do justice to.

AN AUTUMN HIKE WORTH THE EFFORT

Adatara-yama turned out to be much more than an ordinary autumn foliage destination. The hike offered a wonderful variety of scenery, from colorful forests and golden slopes to rugged volcanic terrain that looked almost like another planet.

The ropeway made the approach easier, although its operating hours meant that timing was important. And while the trail became more challenging near the crater, the spectacular views provided plenty of motivation to keep going.

What I enjoyed most was the contrast between the two sides of the mountain: the warm, familiar beauty of autumn and the stark, almost alien landscape created by volcanic forces.

ADATARA-YAMA is a reminder that Japan’s mountains are not just about beautiful forests and autumn leaves—they can also be wild, rugged, and wonderfully unexpected.

TSUCHIYU ONSEN — A RELAXING HOT SPRING ESCAPE AFTER HIKING

Nestled in the mountains of Fukushima Prefecture, TSUCHIYU ONSEN (土湯温泉) is a charming hot spring town where you can unwind after a long day on the trails. Surrounded by forested mountains and blessed with abundant natural hot spring water, it offers a peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

One of the town’s distinctive features is its connection to kokeshi wooden dolls, particularly the traditional Tsuchiyu style, which has a long history in the area. As you wander through the town, you’ll find traditional inns, small shops, and hot spring facilities tucked along the river and narrow streets.

After our hike, we decided to stop by this nearby onsen town for a well-deserved hot bath. There was nothing quite like soaking in the warm, mineral-rich water to soothe our tired muscles and wash away the fatigue of the hike. It was the perfect way to end the day — a little reward for our efforts on the mountain!
