(Japan) Hiking @ Tanigawadake

Oct. 7, 2023

Tanigawadake is located in Yamanashi prefecture. Although it is only 1977m, it is made up of two sharp uphill, with a valley in between. The weather there could change rapidly and become very windy and cold, which makes it dangerous sometimes.

In fact, when we hiked there in Oct., we also encountered bad weather. Weather report said it would rain, but since we already had booking at the mountain hut at the top, we still went.

We had to take gondola to middle of mountain. and then walked on the road for 30 min., passing tunnel and waterfall, before we arrived the entrance of the mountain. It soon became quite steep and rocky that there were many metal chains on the way to help people going up. It was quite tiring, but we found a hut middle of the way, that we got to take a rest and go to toilet. At middle of the way, it was already very windy and cold, almost everybody took shelter at the hut and bought cup noodles or hot drink to warm up.

After a rest, we kept going, but the weather got worse and worse. It was extremely windy that our fingers hurt. Although it was very foggy and difficult to see the way, while sharp cliff around. I was quite scared at the neck of the mountain. Also, we walked too slow that we were unlikely to arrive the mountain hut before dark. At such a cold, windy, foggy and difficult landscape, it seems too dangerous to continue. Finally, we gave up at early afternoon and turn around. We had to cancel our booking and lost some money, but better safe than sorry…
