This time we drove to Southern Izu to visit some of the best places. They are quite well-known to local Japanese, but not so known to foreigners. Yet, they are highly recommended, especially great to visit in the Summer.
This a natural hidden sea cave next to Toji Beach, close of Shimoda area of southern Izu. There is a big sign and stone stairs leading down into the sea cave, next to a small public toilet and parking lot. The parking lot is free before 8AM.
The Toji Beach is also beautiful white sand beach with interesting landscape and volcanic stones around.
Further down the southernmost point of Izu, you will find Hirozo Beach. It is actually not a beach, but a rocky area between some small islands that can only be reached by boat (just 5-10min. and JPY 2,000 for roundtrip per day) At the shore, there is big private parking lot, rental shops and boats to reach the Hirizo Beach regularly during Summer.
Many people take the boats to Hirizo Beach for day camp and snorkeling. There are many interesting fishes and corals in this area, and it is sheltered by the rocks from strong waves, which make it a perfect spot for snorkeling.
Shimoda area used to be where the westerners first landed in Yokohama area, and this Perry Road was even named after a Commodore. This street is not so long, but many buildings here are well-preserved to be restaurants or teahouse. It is a perfect place to enjoy a relaxing afternoon, watching the ducks and fishes in the river. Also, there are some nice seafood restaurants and even public baths in you return from the sea.
