(Japan) Miura Peninsula

Feb. 2023

Miura Peninsula is a very special place. Even though it is near Tokyo, within the densely populated Kanagawa prefecture, it is like a quick escape from the urban areas. Here you can find so much nature and sceneries that you can hardly believe.

EAST MIURA

Coming from eastern side of Miura, I usually pass Yokosuka, where there is US naval base, so there are plenty of burger shops and second-hard stores. It is a good place to enjoy some rich hamburgers. It could be harsh for bicycles because there are always lot of traffic and several tunnels to pass through, but once you see the coastline, there would be much less traffic, better scenery. There are even some onsen and shopping malls on the way.

Kannonzaki Park is my favorite place to visit. It was surprising big, have a free campsite, lighthouse, complicated walking routes up the hill, surrounded by woods. It took me 2 hours and I still couldn’t complete the walking routes. There are some old structures and tunnels, interesting landscape, and ancient trees inside the park. I even camped once inside the park. It was very quiet and peaceful next to the sea. Only a few people came by to fish at the shore at night.

SOUTH MIURA

Jogashima Park is another of my favorite national park, located at the southern tip of Miura. It is actually an island, connected to the mainland with short bridge. One side of Jogashima Park is rocky area popular for fishing and has a lighthouse. The other side of the park is beautifully-maintained park with tower and grass, which is perfect for relaxing and sight-seeing.

WEST MIURA

There are several beautiful spots at west Miura, perfect to see the sunset.

Arasaki Park is one of my favorite place to visit, having some distinguished landscapes and caves. Also, on the way you’ll pass by some fishing ports, can enjoy some fresh seafoods or buy some seafoods home!

Tateishi Park is another romantic place to watch the sunset. There is a piece of protruded land away from the shore, which is accessible by stairs. I have camped there for a night, and watched both sunset and sunrise from there. There is a free parking lot of restaurants next to it, so not that quiet, but still very peaceful place to stay.

If you are leaving from the west, it is always nice to ride around the coastline, you will pass the Sushi beach. On a sunny day, you can find plenty of surfers there. Also, it is great to stop by some restaurants or have a coffee in front of the beach. Although the traffic could be quite heavy during weekends at this popular place.

In fact, there are much more places to discover in Miura area. Hope you enjoy~~
