Karlovy Vary: A Spa Town Full of Elegance and Charm

Nestled in the rolling hills of western Czechia, Karlovy Vary is the country’s most famous spa town, known for its colorful architecture, natural hot springs, and timeless elegance. Founded in the 14th century by Emperor Charles IV, the town has welcomed visitors for centuries who came to relax in its mineral-rich thermal waters, believed to have healing properties.

Strolling through Karlovy Vary feels like stepping into a movie set. Grand colonnades, pastel-colored buildings, and charming cafés line the winding Teplá River, while ornate spa houses reflect the town’s glamorous past. Over the years, it has attracted royalty, artists, composers, and famous figures from across Europe, giving it a rich cultural heritage.

Beyond its spas, Karlovy Vary is famous for local treats like crispy spa wafers (lázeňské oplatky) and the herbal liqueur Becherovka. Whether you’re sampling the thermal spring water, wandering the elegant streets, or simply enjoying the relaxed atmosphere, Karlovy Vary offers the perfect blend of history, wellness, and old-world charm.

We took a FlixBus to Karlovy Vary, and from the moment we arrived, it felt like everyone else was much wealthier than us! The town has long been a luxury spa destination, once reserved for royalty and the rich, so it’s filled with grand hotels, designer boutiques, and elegant buildings.

The streets were lined with souvenir shops selling beautifully painted ceramic spa cups. At first, I wondered why everyone was carrying the same funny-looking mug, until I realized they were using them to drink from the many decorative hot spring fountains around town. Of course, I had to try it too… and honestly, the mineral water tasted like rusty metal! It’s definitely an acquired taste. Surprisingly, I didn’t come across the famous spa wafers, but there were gelato stands everywhere. Maybe ice cream has become the new local favorite.

Out of all the places I visited on this trip, Karlovy Vary was by far the most unique. It didn’t feel like a typical European city at all—it had a completely different atmosphere, more like a peaceful holiday resort where everyone had come to slow down and relax.

My favorite attraction was the Kaiserbad Spa. Once a luxurious bathhouse and social venue for nobles and wealthy guests, it now serves as a museum, while the basement hosts concerts and glass exhibitions. Walking through the building felt like exploring a small palace. There were elegant ballrooms, reading rooms, endless corridors lined with private bathing and relaxation rooms, and beautiful wall paintings featuring classical bathing scenes. It was incredibly grand and unlike anything I’d seen before.

After exploring the town, we decided to hike up to the View of Charles IV Tower. The trail wasn’t very well marked and didn’t even appear properly on Google Maps, so we got lost a couple of times and spent over an hour finding our way. Thankfully, the view from the top made all the effort worthwhile. The walk through the cool green forest was refreshing, especially on a hot summer day. Along the way, we passed several abandoned villas hidden among the trees. Although they had clearly been neglected for years, they were still stunning, with beautiful architecture that hinted at a glamorous past.

Karlovy Vary turned out to be the perfect escape from the summer heat—a town full of history, elegance, and surprises. It felt like stepping into a completely different world, and it was easily one of the highlights of my trip.
