Würzburg is a historic city in the Franconia region of northern Bavaria, Germany. It’s known for its rich cultural heritage, baroque architecture, and as a center of wine production in the region.
Quick Overview:
- Location: On the Main River, between Frankfurt and Nuremberg
- Population: Around 130,000
- Famous for: The Würzburg Residence (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Marienberg Fortress, wine, and university life
It took us almost an hour and transit trains to get from Munchen Airport terminal to Wurzburg Hbf station. I was so hungry that as soon as we arrived Wurzburg station, I bought an ham and cheese sandwich from a sandwich bar. It was cheap and tasted simple but I liked it. The bread and cheese in Europe tasted totally different from Japan.
Wurzburg is a medium town that I like. It was compact, convenient and pretty. Our hotel (Dorint Hotel Würzburg) was like 10min walk from train station. A regular business hotel, but it had a very nice breakfast buffet and breakfast room.

1st day I took a long walk across the river to the other side, to visit Marienberg Fortress. It was a really relaxing walk, and the view from the other side of the riverbank was beautiful. The fortress was preserved very well, it also included some buildings and gardens.

After that, we walked back into the town center, where we visited New Munster Catholic Church, which has many beautiful paintings on the ceilings. It surely worth to visit. We walked to a few supermarkets, but in the end we bought burgers back as dinner.

Next day, we continued to visit Würzburg Residence, which required entry fee, but it was the best place to visit in Wurzburg. The ceiling in the whole residence were full of different paintings, so amazing I could not lower my head but kept staring at the ceiling. There were countless rooms connected to each other, each with different theme color and designs.

Wurzburg was not a big town, probably 2 days is enough to visit it, but it was a very pleasant medium-size town to visit if you have extra days in Germany.
